Limitations
Mapscape Limitations:
Mapscape is rigorously tested and has been approved through an ESRI technical sales process. We like to be transparent about our software, as where we encounter any limitations, we will list them here.
IDENTIFIED ISSUE: | IMPACT: | SOLUTION: |
The Offline mode enables you to take maps offline where there is a poor or no 4g signal. | *If you want to use Bluesky HD Aerial Imagery or Ordnance Survey Mastermap (OSMM) offline, these types of mapping data requiring pre-formatting to load the map data onto the device. | please contact the office where we will be able to provide you with a solution. |
Training Videos for all three modules is evolving. |
We partly rely on customer feedback that identifies areas where video training is required. The software is very straightforward to use and requires little or no training. |
Training videos are starting to appear at: Mapscape – User Guide If you have any questions, please Contact Us and we will find a solution for you. |
Printing maps above A3 papersize. | Labelling and features in if close proximity can become hidden due to an ESRI automated process. | Shar the site plan layout to AutoCAD which will allow larger scale representation to A1 and A0. |
Carbon Calculations are estimations of carbon storage in the tree trunk(s), and hedge lengths as best we can calculate them from the research we have undertaken in collaboration with The University of Liverpool. | Our estimates maybe conservative compared to that of other systems. | We are working with our partners to look at developing these calculations to improve the accuracy. |
Any identified limitations will when resolved be automatically updated in the background. You are welcome to contact us to enquire as to the progress.
ESRI Limitations:
Add Data Widget – When importing File data, please note that: Uploaded *.csv files are limited to a maximum of 1,000 records, and all other supported file types are limited to 4,000. The maximum upload size is 2 MB for a shapefile and 10 MB for all other file types.
If the files you require importing are larger than the above sizes, please email admin@mapscape.co.uk and we will provide you with a solution or quotation. This may involve additional and/or 3rd party service charges.
These limitations are a guide, there may be limitations that we have not identified for reasons beyond our reasonable control. If you as a Mapscape user, identify an issue that is not listed here, please do contact us so we can investigate, resolve and advise others. Thank you for your assistance.

CAD and Digital Mapping
CAD and Digital Mapping
CAD Drawings:
- Mapscape connects directly to AutoCAD using the free ESRI ArcGIS to CAD plugin available at https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/arcgis-for-autocad. We recommended checking with ESRI to access the latest version.
- For AutoCAD users, here is a Getting Started Guide
- If you do not have access to AutoCAD, we will provide you with the contact details of a 3rd party CAD Drawing Service, who are keen to help you with your Tree Survey site plan requirements on a Pay-as-you-Go basis.
- information on how CAD Drawing Services can provide cost-effective site plan solutions is seen at https://www.mapscape.co.uk/dwg-dxf-support/.
For further details, please refer to the end-user agreement s12.14 to s12.19
Digital Mapping:
- Mapscape Includes a range of UK ESRI digital base maps including OpenStreetMap, and aerial imagery on both the Desktop and Mobile App. Living Atlas is available on the Desktop.
- Import Shapefiles, and KML.
- Add GIS datasets to your Desktop map view including URLs, or upload local files as temporary layers that you can switch off or off. You can’t however save the layers to the map.
- Print your Desktop screen view to PDF, JPEG, PNG, and SVG file formats up to A3 papersize.
Please view all sections of the BS 5837 Tree Survey module – Product Specifications.
Using the Add Data Widget:
URL: You can add the data in the following formats by both Search and URL: Feature service, map service, vector tile service, image service, scene service, KML, WFS, WMS, WMTS, GeoJSON, and CSV.
File: Add data by dragging files to the widget or by browsing local storage. Currently, you can upload data in the following formats: CSV, GeoJSON, KML, and shapefile.
Note: Uploaded CSV files are limited to a maximum of 1,000 records and all other supported file types are limited to 4,000. The maximum upload size is 2 MB for a shapefile and 10 MB for all other file types.

CAD Drawing Guidelines
CAD Drawing Guidelines
To upload CAD site plans into Mapscape, you will connect Mapscape directly to AutoCAD, using the free ESRI ArcGIS to CAD plugin available by Clicking here
If you do not have access to AutoCAD, we provide the contact details of a 3rd party CAD Drawing Service, which can provide a CAD drawing service using the above plugin on a cost effective and Pay-as-you-Go basis.
The methodology is to create a simple and uncluttered CAD drawing that illustrates the site boundary, the trees, hedges, vegetation and relevant site infrastructure for the tree surveyor to easily collect tree survey information on site and edit in the office if required, in preparation to transfer that tree survey information to the original CAD drawing to create a draft/final drawing.
When uploading a CAD site plan into Mapscape using the plugin, here is a set of CAD drawing guidelines*:
- Must be georeferenced. That is, the CAD file (*.DWG or *.DXF must be embedded with the 6-digit northings and eastings (Standard names for the x and y coordinates) set to British National Grid (BNG). Not to be confused with Geographic Marker Points.
- Consider including an OS Mastermap DWG/DXF tile to align architectural drawings to British National Grid (BNG), as it may be unknown how the drawing was measured or, to what drawings standards were used.
- Units: Must be configured in metres (m).
- Will only accept elements drawn as Text, Points, Lines and Polygons.
- Must be orientated vertically to Ordnance Survey North.
- Do not use coloured lines, use only black lines
- All drawing elements must be contained within their specific and correct layers. All drawing elements must be unblocked and/or ungrouped with fragments of any previous drawings or revisions removed, including the removal of multiple copies of stacked drawing elements.
- Do not include external references to other site plans, sectional views, clutter, large-scale infrastructure, multiple viewports, elevations and any elements not needed by the tree surveyor, who only requires a simple georeferenced CAD site plan as described above that includes where possible the tree trunk positions, to collect tree survey site data using Mapscape.
