10-point Software buying considerations

When considering which tree management software to either buy new or replace an existing system, here are important points towards your final decision.

  1. Only download software 💻 from legal, accredited and trusted websites.
  2. Are there any additional costs, such as the purchase of digital maps, or technical support?
  3. Is my tree survey data hosted on a dedicated UK based managed server?
  4. What type of server / database is being used, what are its security features?
  5. Are the software providers ‘terms of use’ drafted by a legal professional?
  6. Do you own your tree survey data?
  7. Is there an accredited ‘safety compliance statement’ before downloading a free trial?
  8. Is there evidence that software provider Privacy Policy is valid under the the General Data Protection Regulations?
  9. Does the software have a warranty or proof of an up to date Penetration test?
  10. How are software updates made available?

✔ We hope the above list helps with your buying considerations, and highlights the importance of data security, legal compliance and software licensing.

✔ If in any doubt seek professional advice from your business cyber insurance company.

What site plan formats can I use ?

You can import Georeferenced DXF site plans, direct from your local drive, that will automatically snap to their ground position

Non-georeferenced DXF site plans can also be imported and manually moved to their ground position.

You can also convert a DWG site plan to a DXF format to import direct to the mapping window.

Exporting site plans can choose from: DXF, KML, GeoTIFF and or PDF formats.

Tree survey data can be exported to an Excel spreadsheet, or copied directly from the easy accessible SQL datatable.

Can I use non-georeferenced DXF site plans ?

Yes,

You can import non-georeferenced DXF site plans, and then move the site plan to it’s ground position.

How do export my completed DXF tree survey site plan ?

Click on the DXF export button which will save a copy of the DXF in the C: drive > Mapscape > Exports > DXF folder – ready for use.

Can I add tree positions to my site plan ?

Yes,

Tree positions are added by clicking on: Add tree > select the position of the tree over the digital map and Tap the screen.

The GPS function connects a mobile phone with a dual frequency GPS chipset via Bluetooth to the mapping window to plot tree positions.

Can I draw my own DXF site plan ?

Can I plot tree positions using my mobile phone ?

Yes,

You can connect your mobile phone via Bluetooth to your device via a GPS app.

Several mobile phones are appearing on the market with dual frequency GPS / GNSS features using bands  L1 and L5.

Single-frequency GPS phones can only receive satellite signals transmitted on the L1 frequency band, while dual-frequency GPS phones can receive satellite signals n both the L1 and L5 bands.

Dual-frequency GPS / GNSS capability means that the receivers are able to receive two  signals at different frequencies from a satellite.

Dual frequency provides increased reliability to users – if one of the frequency bands fails, the other can be used as backup.

Please always check with your mobile phone customer support to confirm if your phone is GPS dual frequency enabled.

Does a mobile phone GPS take ages to position itself ?

This will partly depend on the environmental and ground position conditions and at the time of survey.

Our results demonstrated reasonable fast-tracking between different tree positions.

The mobile phone GPS position that appears on the mapping window, is colour coded for levels of accuracy measured in metres.

How do I input Tree Survey data ?

A digital Stylus pen is required when using a Tablet. on site.

A mouse is used when operating the software on an office PC, or optional when using laptop.

Are the Tree Survey forms customisable ?

The user interfaces for:

A. BS 5837 Tree Surveys.

B. Stage 1- Preliminary Tree Condition / Risk Assessments.

– do not require any set up and customisation of cells is not available.

Mapscape is an off the shelf tree survey solution.

Form fields are pre-configured for ease-of-use, whilst following the tree survey processes for option A.

For option B. If tree survey information is not required to be included in a cell, then the cell is left blank.

It tree survey information is then required for the next tree surveyed, then it can be added to the cell.

Using option B. means you only need to record the relevant  tree survey information to the specific tree. E.g. Hung-up branches – not identified do not need recording.

The option is however available for the next tree in the tree survey, where Hung-up branches might be identified.

Will it produce completed tree reports ?

Yes,

Once you have recorded your tree survey information for:

By using the Export as Report function, all your tree survey data is converted into a Excel spreadsheet, with all the information placed in the correct cell.

This process is completed in a matter of seconds.

What is Geo-referencing & GiS?

What is Geo-referencing ?

Geo-referenced is something drawn, which has a co-ordinate system, scale, and rotation with regards to north, and co-ordinates that enables it to be placed somewhere on the earth’s surface.

The UK uses the British National Grid co-ordinate system, which is a flat plane broken up in to equal squares.

Location co-ordinates are normally referred to as Eastings and Northings and are measured in meters.

Geo-referencing is the process of making something Geo-referenced.

What does GiS mean ?

Geographical Information System or GiS for short, is a means of graphically displaying geo-referenced datasets in a layered format, with other overlapping related datasets, almost like projector transparencies.

For example; a town might have one layer for Buildings, one layer for Roads, one layer for Rivers, which together form a map.

Using GiS, we have the ability to work on individual layer, such as  site plans or trees.

Mapscape is a powerful GiS program that is underpinned by the QGIS project.

Does Mapscape work with non georeferenced site plans ?

Yes.

Mapscape contains it own unique easy-to-use manual georeferencing tool.

This means that you can import a non georeferenced DXF site plan straight from your local drive, directly into the mapping window.

Once in, you can reposition a non-georeferenced DXF site plan to its exact ground position.

What is a GeoTiff and why is it useful ?

You may have seen when browsing on your PC the extension *.Tiff

Tiff is a picture image file format similar to a PNG or JPG, but is much better at capturing shapes and outlines.

Add Geo to Tiff and it becomes a georeferenced image file that expands to the real-life co-ordinates, scale and rotation on the ground, and is referred to as a GeoTiff.

Why is a GeoTiff useful ?

Imagine you have a topographical or mastermap DXF site plan together with the building development and tree locations.

Press the Export to GeoTIFF button in Mapscape to generate a GeoTiff.

You can share that GeoTiff file and import it in to AutoCAD or a GiS System.

A GeoTiff file can be made transparent with Google Earth’s aerial imagery layer.

Generating a GeoTiff copy of your own files, means you can drag and drop this copy back in to the mapping window.
