I can't connect to Mapscape or can't see any Server layers ?

On the Mapscape interface, the top blue bar will clearly tell you whether you have internet connection or not and whether you are logged in to the Mapscape Server.

You may also occasionally notice a no Server or Live layers are listed message. Mapscape checks your 4g connection every 90-seconds and if necessary reloads missing layers.

Please make sure you have WIFI or 4g internet connection and Mapscape says ‘Online’ in the blue title bar.

If you have internet but still can’t log in then please try a reboot before contacting Mapscape.

Can I work offline or with no internet ?

Yes.

Mapscape will happily work offline until internet connection is restored. Be aware though, that with no internet connection you cannot save your work to the server as it will be be temporarily stored on your local drive until you have connection again.

Can I back up my data to somewhere other than the Mapscape Server?

Yes. Use the ‘Export Layer’ button in the upper menu next to the ‘Save’ button.
In fact we actively encourage regular backups. The Mapscape server is backed up at the end of each day but it would be alot quicker and more convenient for you if you had a backup routine too.

Where does Mapscape hold my exported files ?

Try here …. C:/Mapscape/Export/

Why do my imported files dissapear when I close Mapscape?

The Mapscape program is quite unique, very much like an interface pulling in all the resources it needs from different places. Consequently it only exists in your computer’s memory. ie there is no way of saving it. This has many benefits but the disadvantage is all imported layers become temporary layers.

However, Mapscape allows drag and drop and in the case of site plans they can easily be uploaded to your own secure area of the Mapscape server for a more permanent copy.

What dictation software could I use ?

Mapscape is configured to use Windows compatible, the most intelligent speech recognition solution on the market:
Dragon Home v14 or later.

This enables you to work hands free using a USB, UHF radio or Bluetooth headset.

Just walk around the tree and speak out your tree survey observations information that is instantly converted to text on the Mapscape survey comments window.

You don’t need an internet connection as Dragon Home is installed on Windows C:/ Drive.

If you decide to use this performance dictation technology,  we advise selecting a Windows 10 device that meets the recommended Mapscape system requirements

Do also check this aligns with the system requirements of the version of Dragon Home version you decide to purchase.

What microphone headset would you recommend ?

Whilst this is a personal choice that includes a budget, we would recommend selecting a microphone system that you feel comfortable wearing and with easy to use controls.

This is particularly important with head sets worn for long periods.

An adjustable microphone that sits close to your mouth can filter out background noise.

As you will be moving you head around a lot looking up and down at trees, the microphone must stay firmly in place.

We do not recommend the single combined microphone earpiece that’s often used whilst driving.

The best test results came in from using a Windows compatible Alvoxcon: Wireless Lapel Microphone for Computer, USB lavalier Mic System. This system is available on Amazon Prime.

This system clips on to your clothing, can be doubly secured through a button hole using tie wraps, or can be hand held and kept in your pocket until required.

If you find a better cost effective option, please let us know, so we can field test and update this drop down.

How do I set up Electronic Handwriting Input & Speech to Text?

Firstly:

Using a Stylus Pen:

On the Windows 10 settings panel make sure the Pen & Windows settings are configured to your preference and it is recommended to select the ‘Improve recognition tab to personalise your hand writing recognition.

When using a Stylus pen for recording handwriting in Mapscape:

On the Windows 10 Tablet taskbar select > Touch keyboard > tap on the settings icon top left, [Keyboard with a small cog] and from the available icons > select the pen and paper icon (Top right ), this will bring you up a narrow text input window where you write with the Stylus pen that will automatically transfer your handwriting into the selected field.

As a result of more advanced field test with Stylus pens for a Touch Screen Windows 10 Tablet; we would recommend investing in a: Pressure and Tilt Sensitive, Magnetic Stylus pen that includes a Palm Rejection Feature.

This will give increased precision and easy of use and we would say that a budget of around £50.00 will be a suitable budget

Using a Speech to Text:

You can use Windows 10 inbuilt Speech to text, although whilst not as accurate as using Dragon Home v14 or later, it is an option and improved if you speak slowly and clearly.

In the Windows 10 Settings > Sound > make sure your microphone is selected and tested.

In the Windows 10 Settings > Time & Language > Speech > to make sure your language settings and Microphone settings are configured to your preference.

What is Geo-referencing & GiS?

What does Geo-referencing or Geo-referenced mean?

The term ‘Geo-referenced’ is used to describe something drawn which has a co- ordinate system, scale, rotation with regards to north and co-ordinates which would allow it to be placed somewhere on the earth’s surface.

The UK uses the British National Grid co-ordinate system which is a flat plane broken up in to equal squares.

Location co-ordinates are normally referred to as Eastings and Northings and are measured in meters.

Geo-referencing is the process of making something Geo-referenced.

What does GiS mean ?

Geographical Information System or GiS for short, is a means of graphically displaying geo-referenced datasets in a layered format with other overlapping related datasets, almost like projector transparencies.

For example; a town might have one layer for Buildings, one layer for Roads, one layer for Rivers, which together form a map.

Using GiS, we have the ability to individually interrogate each layer, or add our own layers, such as for trees.

Mapscape is a GiS program that is underpinned by the QGIS project.

What is a GeoTiff and why is it useful?

You may have seen when browsing on your PC the extension *.Tiff

Tiff is a picture image file format similar to a PNG or JPG but is much better at capturing shapes and outlines.

Add Geo to Tiff and it becomes a georeferenced image file that expands to the real-life co-ordinates, scale and rotation on the ground and is referred to as a GeoTiff.

Why is a GeoTiff useful?

Imagine you have a topographical or mastermap DXF site plan in Mapscape, together with the building development, tree locations and tree buffers.

Press the Export to GeoTIFF button in Mapscape to generate a GeoTiff.
Then share that GeoTiff file with clients, who could very easily import it on to their own AutoCAD or GiS System.

This can be made transparent with Google Earth’s aerial imagery layer on top.

Or, you can generate a ‘hard’ reference copy for your own files, if you need to drag and drop a copy back in to the Mapscape mapping window.

Does Mapscape work with non georeferenced site plans ?

Yes.

Mapscape contains it own unique easy-to-use manual georeferencing tool.

This means that you can import a non georeferenced DXF site plan straight from your local drive, directly into the mapping window.

Once in, you can quickly and easily reposition a non georeferenced DXF site plan to its exact ground position in seconds.

What if the site is in a 4g dead zone, or has a weak 4g signal ?

Mapscape knows when the 4g connection is lost, and will automatically switch to offline mode.

You can still continue to collect and input tree survey data.

If a 4g connection is lost, Mapscape automatically attempts to connect to the 4g network every 90 seconds.

When a 4g connection is re-established, it will be visible on the Mapscape header bar and your work will be automatically saved to the server.

How quickly will it take to learn Mapscape?

Whilst everybody learns at different speeds, to achieve the best results please watch the inbuilt Videos by clicking on the red Help button on the Mapscape interface.

These short videos will quickly show you how the functions and features work together.

You can watch these videos when out on site if you need a reminder and without using your 4g data plan, as we’ve built them into the program for you.

Mapscape software is designed for ease-of-use with a low technical support requirement.

Is Mapscape available on Android or on an Apple mac?

*shp files including Blue Sky data will drag and drop straight into the mapping window.

Mapscape comes with a DWG to DXF convertor.
